Will ending fast fashion save our world?

Good afternoon everyone!

The title of this post is pretty self explanatory really. The question that has been out there for some time and at the back of everyone’s mind but has only recently came to light since Stacey Dooley’s documentary which I feel a lot of people have watched and can relate to wholeheartedly. I worked in retail for over six years and still work in fashion today so I know first hand what its like to deal with the demanding expectations of high street and fast fashion stores.

I will hold my hands up as much as anyone will in this generation  and admit that we all buy and consume too much. I want to say it out right that it isn’t our fault. It is the fault of the ever growing clothing businesses. With that being said it does not mean there is nothing that we cant do about it and try and help take the pressure off. We all have an influence so why is no one fully using it?

Three decades ago clothing was more limited and made of higher quality using more locally resourced materials. Yes this is still available today but it is genuinely a lot more expensive than your typical high street clobber simply because of the quantity that is pumped out of these factories across the world. It is more desirable it seems to favour quantity over quality.

You may be reading this thinking “Your wardrobe is huge” “You buy too much” etc etc  and yes I agree it comes with the description of being an influencer. It is a lifestyle choice, a hobby but that does not mean that I’m not trying to help out behind the Instagram photos. I have always shopped in charity shops before it was cool to even do so. My Granny and Mom were the driving force behind me shopping there. I grew up shopping in them as a little girl not because we were poor but because the two most influential women in my life had an eye for a bargain. Whether it be a rare antique or an old piece of quality vintage clothing it was the meaningful element of the item that mattered not the cost or where it came from. This state of mind has now been passed down to me. I absolutely love shopping in charity shops it gives me a buzz when I find that piece of clothing that I know no one else in my area or even country will own. Even better when that item is truly vintage and of higher quality. It honestly dosent hurt to head out of your door and go and find your nearest charity shop, it not only helps that charity but you also never know when you’re going to get that gem of a find! – ( TOP TIP: Always remember to gift aid if that option is there in your charity shop as this helps the charity claim tax back from the government!)

As a consumer of high street goods and an influencer it is hard to keep up with the ever changing trends and this involves an ever bursting wardrobe. If you are like me and buy a lot whatever you do please please don’t just throw away! I usually sell on ebay/depop or give to charity. For me personally Depop is a great platform to sell used or unwanted clothing. There are a lot of users yes some scammers but overlooking that the idea is brilliant! I myself have sold many unwanted clothes or items which I have worn a couple of times and this gives these items a new lease of life and has made someone else happy! I have bought off there too, its an endless cycle of recycling and up-cycling! With this idea set in motion and the more and more choosing to recycle our clothes it may start to make a difference in the long term. It certainly wont stop the growing fast demand for high street fashion but it will help! You need to ask yourself would you want to pay full price for an item or get it half price or even less for the exact same item that has been worn once or twice and is still in shops today?

Keeping with the up-cycling trend places like Etsy are a great place for home made recycled or custom made items, as well your local Facebook pages/friends. Try locally sourcing first. You may be shocked with the results and the quality of the item!

The point of this post is not to criticise anybody, as whether or not you like it we are all unintentionally trying to keep up with the growing consuming world. Its a sad fact that does seriously need addressing properly. What we can however do is help and try and limit that. Think more where you’re shopping and what you’re doing with your older clothes. Every bit of difference helps and it may just give everyone involved a better quality of life. Below I have a short list of little things everyone can do to help out!

  1. Shop more locally (Facebook business pages/Local shops)
  2. Resell on apps and websites (Ebay, Depop, Shpock, Mercarci)
  3. Hold a clothing sale/car boot.
  4. Shop in charity shops.
  5. Think about what you’re buying (Do I really need that leopard skirt which I already own in 3 different colours?)
  6. Limit the amount of pair of jeans you’re buying (quality over quantity)

Aluna New cocktail menu event

Evening!

I’m going to start by apologising as I should have got around to writing this last week but it’s been a busy one since last Wednesday!

Anyway! A few of you may have seen that I got invited along to a new cocktail menu event evening hosted by Aluna in the Mailbox (Birmingham). If you aren’t familiar with Birmingham or thinking about heading here you need to head to the Mailbox.. More specifically Aluna! It is situated on the ground level, down some steps which are situated right in the middle of the square and Aluna is just on the left with the canal right infront of it, its nestled between a few other bars and restaurants it’s easy to find once you get into the mailbox itself!

I was very fortunate to receive this invite and was able to bring along two friends with me to share this experience with! I was excited to go back to Aluna as I hadnt been in over two years! Never again am I leaving it that long! We were greeted at the door and each handed three cocktail vouchers to be used against any of the new cocktails that were joining the cocktail menu family!

Gazing across the menu the choice was incredible! Easily to navigate and with an ingredient list in tow to help you choose! Most of Aluna’s cocktails are influenced with a science element. There were some that bubbled, some that smoked, some were set on fire and so on. The bar staff were eager to display this whilst making our chosen cocktails. I had three cocktails in this order,

1. ‘Smokey Manhattan’ If you love bourbon this is the drink for you! A short drink of bourbon and vermouth served smoked.

2. ‘Deadly Elixir’ Classic rum punch with a kick of overproof tiki fire. This one arrived in a super cool skull shaped glass.

3. ‘Bush Fire’ Old J shaken with sloe gin, raspberries and rosemary, torched with a spray of old J tiki fire. This was amazing to watch as it bubbled as you were still drinking it!

The night also included a DJ who was playing music all night which increased the lively atmosphere! Management and staff were also very friendly and accommodating and were walking around all night chatting to everyone and making sure everyone was having a good time. It was top service especially as the cocktails were also offered as table services with added nibbles to accompany the spirits being devoured on the night! I noticed a few people had ordered the cocktail tree which looked incredible! Sadly we didn’t get to try this but as they arrived it caught the attention of the whole place with the amount of cocktails strategically placed onto a metal frame resembling a tree! A true masterpiece!

Overall a good night was had by all of my party and the rest of the room seemed to feel the same, the new cocktail menu is beaming with choice including a variety of spirits and concoctions which will ignite your senses and make you go ‘wow’ when you witness them being made right infront of your eyes!

Ideal for: A date/special occasions/cocktail night with friends

Dress code: Smart/casual

Prices: Cocktails range from £4 – £12.95

Aluna also offers a unique food menu with a great selection of dishes.

If you want to go to Aluna or want to have a look at the menus yourself, I’ve linked the website below.. also if you’re not from the Midlands they also have another location in Bristol!

The power suit

It’s the freakinggg weekend! I couldn’t be more happier that it’s saturday and I had the lie in I needed which has completely refreshed me from my week long migraine and the sun is shining, happy days! I have a birthday party tonight it’s my Aunties birthday and it’s ‘Movie fancy dress’ something which I’m very excited for! Although as I’m writing this I do realise the time and don’t have as long as I thought I did to actually get ready…

Suit: PRIMARK (A/W 2017)

Anyway! One of the key wardrobe pieces I think everyone and their dog should need is a staple suit, I’m not talking about the basic work suit, I’m talking about POWER suits. I’ve always been a girly girl and I still think I am but I’m a sucker for a killer suit these days! I think it’s the colour and the stand out factor it gives you whilst wearing it which draws me in. Not gonna lie I have 3 suits which make me feel a million dollars, they might not be practical with a beer in your hand whilst swinging your hair around listening to Tame Impala, but for the impact and for that classy go to look the suit is the item you need. I think the idea that you can mix and match and can wear whatever underneath makes it a great go to look for a night out, the lazy part of me thinks it’s easier than trying to co-ordinate a whole outfit from scratch. Throw on a suit and some comfy or killer shoes and you’re good to go! I’m only 5ft 3 with short arms and legs so I usually do have to have them taken up if I dont buy from the petite section but once it fits there’s no stopping me then!

Topshop for me is the home for the perfect suit and they also do petite yay! I will list some of the suits I’m currently lusting over and filling my basket up with!

Sainsbury’s have recently launched a graduate fashion week collection featuring designer Laura Gillings, whose collection is influenced very much on the 60’s and the array of elements which that era gave us. One of the pieces I’m pretty excited about hasn’t yet dropped but I’m keeping a very close eye for when it does!! Check out this amazing Mick Jagger style orange suit of dreams!!

That’s all for now folks, as I’m about to start my Descent into a Disney princess for the night! Have a great weekend everyone whatever you’re up to

Self love.

Evening all!

Since I’ve started blogging I absolutely love nothing more than to discuss and rant on about my outfits and what I’m adoring at the moment it’s my favourite past time and I’ve developed so much with a lot more confidence than I had before with it all. However there is a little thought that keeps popping up in the back of my brain with a growing urge to just write about things in my own life outside of the fashion world. These include things I’m loving and also things I’m hating which weirdly seems to be easier to write about…. So there you go for the first time there will be a real life opinions, feelings, pet peeving post going live and I’m ready.

I think this feeling has built up over the past few weeks if I’m honest and these are my thoughts nothing else.

PEOPLE! There just seems to be an array of rude PEOPLE this week. As a PERSON, manners don’t cost a thing and that’s a massive pet peeve of mine. I was brought up with values and to be kind always be kind however some people seem to be testing my patience. It’s so easy to not step into other people’s shoes and to just judge, but just think about it for a minute ‘what would that person do?‘ What I’m trying to say is there does not seem to be any etiquette anymore and I feel people can treat me how they want to and I’ve been nice enough to just let it bide for a long long time. Something my mom taught me as a youngster was to ‘treat others how they treat you‘ something I never understood until my 20’s really. I completely understand it now, to earn respect you need to give respect. Act nicely and the hope that something good will come your way is applied. I think reaching the age of 25 has been a turning point for me and although it may seem silly and there’s a lot of negative thoughts, the naiveness has gone. I’ve wised up and I’m thankful that 25 has given me that new lease of character. I will now admit my biggest weakness is people pleasing. Something I’ve tried hard not to do and it’s difficult I will say that much. If it loses me friends or family so be it! Aslong as I’m happy that’s the main thing. Friends or family who don’t check in on you are a loss physically but a massive gain mentally in my eyes. I think I’m not the only one to agree that you do lose friends when you get older but the quality of the ones who stay outweighs it all. After all most only really keep you on social media or in distant contact to try and compete with you which isn’t a life at all quite frankly. I’m an honest person I always have been. Everything is very black and white for me, blunt, or whatever you want to call it. That isn’t a trait I built myself it’s how I grew up my parents are the same, my grandparents were and they all got far in life. What I’m trying to say is the cliche not to compare your chapter 1 with someone’s Lord of the Rings style trilogy. It’s not a race every person is different and we should be sharing life and not competing or side eye judging. You don’t know what someone has or is going through. Some people like myself find it hard to break that comfort zone another bad trait of mine. I struggle mentally to start something new the fear of the unknown maybe?

I know it’s all been quite real what I’ve said so far and maybe a bit shocking to those who know me that I’ve said this but it’s my opinion and my words that I’ve needed to say for some time, simply because I’ve kept my mouth and opinions quiet for sooo long, this is my haven and place I feel most comfortable to express my words. I am a very grateful girl for who is in my life now, I have amazing parents who have supported me no end and I will be forever grateful, a perfect boyfriend who I’m building a future together with, amazing set of close friends who understand everything.

I don’t need to prove anything to anyone else but myself on what I can do and each step i take is a personal accomplishment to me, might not seem like much but it works and that’s how I like it!

Ain’t gonna lie it took some balls to post this so yeah enjoy lovely readers

ROMA

I thought I would share a quick lookbook of all the things I’m loving right now and things I have my beady eyes on for Rome! Seriously the shops have came through with spring summer already! So many amazing pieces that I thought would work best in a blog rather than annoying EVERYBODY on my insta stories haha! Hope this gives you guys some inspiration for upcoming holidays, city breaks, festivals etc! Feel free to message me on my INSTAGRAM about any of the products I’ve listed here! Happy shopping! 😌

Return of the… gingham mac!

Hellooo there! After a crazy two weeks of non stop working/depoping/anniversary celebrating/Rome organising I can safely say I’m back! I’m also bringing the Mac along with me…

I always seem to struggle with in-between season outerwear.. I always have. I mean come on winter is easy you just throw a coat and huge scarf on and you’re good to go! Without anyone knowing the terrible clashing of prints and colours you have hidden underneath. When it comes to spring/summer I always find it that bit more difficult. The first question that often comes in to my head is “Shall I wear a jacket?” Followed by if yes “what thickness shall it be?”

As we all know the weather has been a bit crazy the past few weeks after a glorious heatwave it seems to have made a bit of a u turn with rain, rain and more rain! My recent trip to Oxford it poured down but that’s where this outerwear choice came in very handy! The Mac is perfect, they go with pretty much everything you own, they are lightweight so not too hot and it’s just the all round perfect go to in-between season coat! The one seen in the pictures is a depop purchase of mine and a very good one at that! (Thank you Daisy from Coventry – You legend!) I wanted this when it first came out in Topshops S/S17 collection but always seemed to be out of stock. So you can imagine my excitement when I found this gem in my size!!! Unfortunately Topshop no longer sell this item. But I have had a lot of compliments and people asking me where it’s from so I thought I might share a few that I’ve recently found which are very similar and you can still get your hands on! Go have a mooch!

Polka?

It’s April! When I think of April I think of Easter which of course has just happened but also pretty flowers, warmer weather, baby lambs… you get the idea. Not gonna lie it’s been a bit blah and I feel my health has co-ordinated with this. I also want to apologise for the delay in this post as I’ve felt a bit rubbish mentally and physically for most of this week, why? I do not know! Now onto the fun stuff….

Spring is well and truly on its way (weather depending) and I’m right in saying the shops are a wash with all spring goodness right now. Which is great for pre planning holiday and festival outfits… yay! It’s my favourite time of year (after Christmas) One of my favourite forever/timeless/classic prints has to be the versatile polka dot, especially in monochrome. I have been wearing polka dots for aslong as I can remember (thanks Mom!) and I’m pretty certain I’m still going to be rocking this print when I’m dancing around my old people’s home! Polka dots work with any look you want to go with and never go out of fashion, I’m pretty sure I have items that are hidden at the back of my wardrobe which I’ve had since I was a teenager and could still get away with today! Dress up or down, fancy or casual, the trusty polka has your back! Yes I’m fully aware I sound like Miranda Priestly in ‘ The Devil Wears Prada’ but I can’t express how much this print has sustained in my wardrobe!

GROUND BREAKING

There’s a hell of a lot of decent styles out there at the moment and I’ve linked my top 5 must haves right now below!

MARCH TOP PICKS (UPDATED)

So now I’ve got a little bit more into the blogging side of things and something I now realise I should have done a long long time ago oops! I’m going to be posting regular updates of my wish lists/top picks of must have items which are hot off the new in sections.

The weather has been very drab as of late and it feels like this winter has dragged on and on.. yawnnn. It honestly feels like Christmas was a year ago already, I wish I was exaggerating! But now the clocks have finally gone forward and officially British summer time is now among us, yay! It’s the perfect time for a clothing refresh! I’ve been hoarding and slipping in key pieces for my spring/summer wardrobe since January but I didn’t think it would take this long for me to finally get my wear out of my newly purchased garments! I’m still building up my spring wardrobe myself and can’t wait to finally wear new clothes without having them covered by a big coat and 50 million layers! (This time I am exaggerating) I will be posting a few key items on my want list below with links to each item, Happy spring guys!!

Nhow Berlin – Europe’s first music hotel

Having recently came back from a well needed city break in Berlin, I wanted to share with you all the hotel which I had a pleasure in staying at (Thank you to my friend Gemma for choosing a great hotel! 1-2 I believe the score now stands at) ha

The hotel which we stayed at for 3 nights is the Nhow Berlin, it has a recognised status as the first music hotel in Europe! And my stay here definitely reflected that… The hotel itself is situated next door to MTV studios Berlin and Universal Music so lots of inspiration around! It is also home to its own recording studios situated at the top of the hotel!

Connecting to the hotel is the Seven Star gallery

The concept of the hotel is based purely around the music and each of the five lifts which take you from the lobby area to the different floors has a different genre of music playing in every lift!!

Our hotel room itself was situated on the third floor and we stayed in a Nhow premium room, the theme of pink and neon is very much an influence throughout this hotel and the rooms also reflected this! Our room felt very much like we had stepped into a 1960’s time capsule crossed with Barbies Malibu dream house! The pastel pinks theme ran throughout including the bathroom! The architectural side of the hotel has been thought out very carefully and each detail has been perfected to a high standard with the design being very modern but with a retro twist.

Nhow is situated right on the river with amazing views from the lobby and restaurant out onto the banks, the transport links are very reliable and the overground train is situated just around the corner about a 10 minute walk from the hotel which takes you directly into the city centre in less than 15 minutes! If you don’t want to use public transport you can always walk into the centre something we didn’t do as it was -5 most days! So so cold! But my prediction is that it won’t take too long, Or if walking isn’t fees-able the hotel also provides its own taxi rank outside!

If you want to stay in Berlin and not sure which hotel to stay at, Nhow is definitely one of the best hotels there is to offer with friendly staff, exceptional breakfasts and even lets you hire guitars/keyboards in your hotel room! Not many hotels can offer that service.

We stayed here for 3 nights and on average one night will cost you from £73 per room, I have added a link to the website for more details.
